Music Recommendations

As much as I love the 40's and the WWII era I am not familiar with the music specifics. I know I really enjoy swing, jazz, ragtime, and other sounds of the 30's and 40's, but if I were on a quiz show to name song and artist I would fail miserably. So to you readers... please recommend 5 of your favourite old timey songs for me to get familar with. I am talking about the scratchy popping record sounds of the past. They have to be versions from the 20's - 40's. Songs that I would play on my old Victrola had I had one. I can tell you that I am a fan of Fats Waller already, so his gems won't need recommending.

Vintage 1989 Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure was the first movie that my best friend at the time, Devin Booth and I were allowed to go to alone in the theatre. It was a different world back in 89. Our parents just dropped us off at the theatre and picked us up afterwards. We were 10. After her and I saw this flick we decided that Bill was my boyfriend and Ted was her's and we were happy that way. I believe we saw that movie a good many times in the theatre.

So that movie has ALWAYS held a special place in my heart.

Fast Forward 20 years. Oh god 20 years!!! My friend Jodey and I decide we want to cosplay Bill and Ted for PHXCC09. Turns out it was almost destiny as this movie meant so much to her as a youngin as well and helped fuel her future as a historian. Not to mention that growing up, her friend's "boyfriend" was Bill and her's was Ted. It was perfect! I would be Bill and She would be Ted.

Cosplaying the boys turned out to be most excellent! In fact, our good friend, Doc got in on the action and played Rufus for the outing.

But this post is no good without photos so here you go:

Going to Hell

You know... there are just certain things that delight you to no end and for some reason it makes you feel evil. Well this 2 part video is one of my guilty pleasure. It makes me giggle like a preteen at a Jonas Brothers concert (or for my time, a New Kids on the Block concert) (or even more retro a Jackson 5 concert) (Monkees concert) (Ricky Nelson??)

A vintage look without a single thing being actual vintage... huh!

Performance video

I don't know how long I will keep this entry up. It is video of me performing my One Mint Julep act at the Bob Log III show Jan 4th at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix, AZ. I really wasn't feeling it that night, but had a great time anyway.

If you have never seen Bob Log... you really should! He is fantastic!!

Hair Inspiration : Carole Lombard

Last night for New Year's my friends and myself headed to the Copper Door. They were having a WWII USO themed night. Having a new hair cut I wanted to try out a 30's style. Carole Lombard became my inspiration for the evening. Due to my hair being thicker than hers and a bit longer, it doesn't look like an exact replica of style. Plus, I had been brushing my hair all day and the shorter chin length curls now looked like just past the chin waves. Also, I think I came off a bit more like later Norma Jeane than Carole Lombard... my guess is that it is the thickness again. Looks like I will have to keep working on my 30's styles versus my late 40's...
